- The University Dean of Research is responsible for management of the research office, the implementation of research policy and strategy, and generally promoting and creating an enabling institutional environment for impactful and high quality research
- The post holder reports to and will work closely with the DVC for Research and Innovation
- They will support and oversee the Deans of Research in each of our four Colleges to promote consistent application of research policy and strategy, and be a member of the University Senate
- The incumbent will be expected to drive the implementation of plans to expand and reorganise the operations of the research office recently approved by the UKZN Council.
- As well as having a noteworthy career as a researcher, they will have experience in research management, familiarity with the applicable policy landscape, and be responsible for reporting to an interaction with funding agencies
The specific responsibilities of the role include:
- Research Office organisation, management and control
- Institutional research management
- Management of the University Ethics Committees
- Managing institutional research capacity development initiatives
- Interaction with and reporting to funding agencies
- Promotion of national and international research and development linkages and partnerships
Minimum requirements
- Have attained the rank of full Professor in their discipline
- Be the holder of a Doctoral Degree
- Have at least ten (10) years' relevant experience in an academic/ research environment; of which five (5) years must have been in a leadership/management role
- Be an established academic leader and scholar with an excellent research record at a level that attracts respect and credibility from within the University, international scholars and other relevant external bodies
- Appropriate IT, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills
- Project management and organizational skills

The term of office for this position is five (5) years with the possibility of renewal based on performance. In the case of applicants who are permanent staff members of UKZN, the successful applicant will resume his/her substantive position at the end of this term of office.
