Introduction
The role of a IT Network Consultant is to install, support, and maintain Information technology (IT) network service and associate infrastructure provisions across all 5 university campuses. Network services ensure network connection of telephones, surveillance cameras, access control, audio-visual, data and switching centers, routers, Wi-Fi equipment, and end-user devices such as computers and printers.
Job description
Network Installations
- Assist with the installation of new indoor and outdoor cabling in buildings for the installation of Computer LAN points and telephones
- Assist with the installation of underground cabling and trenching between buildings
- Assist with the installation of new Computer LAN points and telephone extensions
- Read basic building plans, identify the telephone and Computer LAN points and work out what is needed to cable the building. E.g. size of the cable, how many pairs of wires will be needed and how many pairs to allow for possible faults, taking into consideration a possible increase in the number of working extensions
- Installation of new telephone extensions, transfer of telephone points and fault finding
- Keep a record of all the assets deployed, i.e. Asset details, location and warranty
Network Maintenance
- Identify and repair cable faults within and between buildings
- Identify and, where feasible, repair damaged telephone, LAN points and instrument faults
- Assist with the ongoing maintenance of the cabling systems and related equipment. Ensure necessary diagrams and documentation are kept updated
- Assist with the transfer of computer LAN points and telephone extensions from one location to another, ensuring the least possible disruption to other users in the same area. (E.g. when departments move to new offices.)
- Identify and trace Telephone and LAN cabling right through to the Networking switches and related PABX, this is done by using both a tone generator and by following wiring colour codes
Incident Management and Troubleshooting:
- High-level understanding of analysis, troubleshooting, and resolving network incidences
- The incumbent must be able to trace LAN points from point to Networking switch to establish where the problem is located
- The incumbent must be able to trace Telephone extension from point to DB board and onto the PABX system
- The incumbent must be able to use testing equipment to assist with the quick tracing and resolution of Computer and Telephone faults
- Setup and configure network equipment, including computers, audio visual, printers, routers, network points, network switches, Wi-Fi access points, surveillance cameras, telephony system (PABX), etc.
- Identify and repair cable faults within and between buildings
- Install and configure network systems and equipment
- Access the incident management systems on a daily basis to establish workload
- Ensure incidences are resolved and closed timeously
- Ensure speedy resolution of high-priority incidents, such as those that affect a group of users
Consulting and Mentoring
- Participate in network design
- Interacts with other specialists in different domains to ensure a coherent and comprehensive approach to complex network problems
- The incumbent should be able to advise architects, contractors and users on best practices for the network installation in both new and existing buildings
- Comply with the UKZN cabling standards
- Assist in the training of ICS interns in cabling and fault-finding standards
Minimum requirements
- Matric and relevant three (3) year qualification in Information Technology (IT) OR Information Management or Information Systems or Engineering qualification at least NQF Level 6
- A minimum of five (5) years of networking experience
- Strong technical knowledge and experience in networking
- Must possess a valid and unendorsed Drivers Licence or hold a Learner Drivers Licence to obtain a Drivers Licence within six months of employment
