Job description

You will be part of a team working on innovative research to address current engineering challenges facing our society and outstanding teaching that guides the development of creative and critically thinking graduates in a dynamic learning environment.
This position is in the specialist area of Geomatics. The successful candidate/s will form part of the Land Surveying Group. S/he will be required to teach undergraduate courses (Geomatics related), develop independent research programs, supervise postgraduates, undertake administrative duties, participate actively in the local Geomatics community, and contribute to the profession.
The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Agricultural & Civil Engineering and Land Surveying.
Minimum requirements
All applicants must have a BSc(Eng) degree in Land Surveying / Geomatics or a closely related area. In addition, the following applies to each of the levels indicated below.
Professor:
• A PhD in a relevant Land Surveying / Geomatics topic
• Evidence of excellent teaching experience and leadership in curriculum development in a relevant field at tertiary level
• Excellent and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level
• A recognized leader in the field of specialization with an extensive and current research and publishing record in the South African Department of Higher Education (DoHET) accredited journals and peer reviewed conference proceedings. The list is available online.
• Track record of authorship in Q1 and Q2 journals
• Excellent and sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.
• Excellent and sustained track record of successful attraction of external research grants
• Evidence of strong and sustained academic leadership within the Department / School/ College/ University, which includes mentorship and coaching
• Evidence of national and international recognition in a research area within the discipline.
• Registered as a Geomatics Professional with the SAGC or eligible for such registration
Associate Professor:
• A PhD in a relevant Land Surveying / Geomatics topic
• Evidence of appropriate teaching experience and curriculum development experience in a relevant field at tertiary level
• Evidence of current and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level
• Track record of authorship in Q1 and Q2 journals
• A sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.
• Evidence of sustained and successful attraction of external research grants
• Evidence of national and/or international recognition in a research area within the discipline
• Registered as a Geomatics Professional with the SAGC or eligible for such registration
Senior Lecturer
• A PhD in a relevant Land Surveying / Geomatics topic
• Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level
• Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
• A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level
• Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team
• Registered as a Geomatics Professional with the SAGC or eligible for such registration
Lecturer
• A PhD in a relevant Land Surveying / Geomatics topic or
• A Master in a relevant Land Surveying / Geomatics topic with a proof of submission of the dissertation / thesis
• Current research activity as evidenced by a publication in quality scientific journals
• Experience in teaching in a relevant field at tertiary institution
• Registered as a Geomatics Professional with the SAGC or eligible for such registration
