Introduction
The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching & Learning is shaping the future of education through the Digital Curriculum Transformation Project, an integral part of the University Capacity Development Programme. The Office is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and seasoned professional to step into the role of Digital Content Editor. As a key contributor to this transformative initiative, the ideal candidate must be a self-starter, possessing a high level of initiative and expertise in the digital content production and editing domain. This cuts across different functions, from crafting engaging videos to creating compelling podcasts and informative infographics for teaching and learning. The successful candidate will play an essential role in driving innovation in educational content delivery, ensuring that our digital curriculum remains at the forefront of pedagogical advancements. The Digital Content Editor will be tasked with managing multiple projects simultaneously, necessitating efficient time management and the ability to adapt to evolving priorities, thrive under pressure and consistently meet deadlines. The successful candidate must embody a strong work ethic characterized by courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism. This role requires effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including Academics, Instructional Designers, and Technology-Enhanced Learning experts.
Job description

Video Recording
  • Professionally operates a video camera in studio and on location
  • Works as part of a multicamera OB production crew
  • Undertakes any stand-alone camera work and works independently and unsupervised
  • Records to multi format devices or memory cards.  Ensures quality and format of footage meets industry standards
  • Sets up and operates digital vision mixer including set up of virtual sets when recording “live” productions in studio
  • Oversees studio setup, lighting and set design
  • Operates teleprompter when required
Video Editing and Post Production
  • Responsibility for video editing off video playback devices, content servers and storage devices using Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere CC editing software
  • Creates digital effects, performs sound final mix and graphics creation
  • Undertakes sound recordings in studio, does adjustments, mixdown and mastering
  • Undertakes digitisation and capturing of archival materials including metadata capture
  • Uploads material and performs format conversion
  • Creates and authors DVD’s and publishes to new media formats including delivery of materials to on-line platforms, uploads to server and digital distribution
  • Recommends new methods of post-production and editing to Project Manager
Technical support
  • Works with the team to complete technical work as required by the project including cabling, wiring, alignment and balancing of electronic and production equipment
  • Configures digital devices, presentations and routing
  • Works as part of the team to set up equipment in studio and on site, rearrange sets
  • Supports the Project Manager by undertaking production training tasks and assisting with student projects as and when required
Graphic Design and Animation
  • Conceptualise, design and create special effects, credits, logos, virtual sets and stings
  • Creates specialised animation for use in video production and presentations
  • Undertakes graphic design work as required for projects
  • Works in specialised Adobe Creative Cloud applications, i.e. After Effects, Photoshop and Audition
  • Recommends and makes suggestions to Production Manager on new creative products and systems
  • Creates and edits photographs for incorporation into video production

Minimum requirements

  • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree in fields such as Video Technology, Media, Production or Visual Arts
  • 4 years production experience with proficiency in video editing, design, and camera work
  • Proven ability to creatively execute production and postproduction tasks
  • Demonstrated ability in designing customised creative presentations
  • Proficiency in specialized software applications such as Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Audition, Photoshop and Canva

 

The incumbent will be based in Durban but servicing all 5 campuses (Howard, Edgewood, Westville, Nelson Mandela medical school and PMB)
