Job description

The Discipline of Physics at Westville seeks to appoint a suitably-qualified candidate as a Senior Lecturer in experimental condensed matter physics to strengthen this research area and to interact with other researchers locally and internationally.

We have research expertise in laser-produced nanomaterials and magnetic alloys, and a range of facilities including a pulsed laser deposition system for thin films, equipment to produce magnetic alloys, tools to measure magnetic properties of materials at low temperatures, access to Raman and Mossbauer spectroscopy, and XRD, SEM/HRTEM for materials characterization. Furthermore, we would like to establish a cold atoms laboratory. Our emphasis is on fundamental and innovative physics.

Note that a Centre for Quantum Computing and Technology is being established in which an experimental condensed matter physicist may be able to contribute in the broad area of quantum materials applicable to quantum technology, and in collaboration in application of quantum computing to modelling of condensed matter systems.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct independent, externally funded research and to participate actively in teaching physics at undergraduate level and in postgraduate supervision.

The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Physics.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD Degree in a relevant discipline
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level
  • Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
  • A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team.

This appointment will be made in line with the University Guidelines/benchmarks, which are available on the University Vacancies website on http://vacancies.ukzn.ac.za/Academic-Process-Proc-Guides.aspx
