Introduction
The College of Humanities is the home of critical thinking, social commentary and robust intellectual debate. It is aptly referred to as “The Soul of the University”. Humanities is the largest of UKZN’s four Colleges and comprises of three diverse, yet complementary schools that offers programme's on the Howard College, Edgewood and Pietermaritzburg campuses.
Job description

  • The College of Humanities is committed to the University’s vision of advancing African scholarship and actively contributes to the intellectual development of the region and the world through teaching and learning, research, development and community engagement.
  • It represents a significant repository on the continent, playing a critical role in the enhancement and promotion of arts, culture, social sciences and education
  • The Dean in the School of Education will oversee various disciplines in under the Bachelor of Education, PGCE degrees and their corresponding graduate programmes
  • The College seeks to appoint three distinguished leaders to champion and direct its new strategic vision within the newly reorganized schools
  • She/he will provide high-level academic leadership and strategic direction of the school in research, teaching, community engagement and transformation consistent with the University’s and College’s vision and mission
  • The Dean and Head of School is part of the College Leadership and Management Team and reports to the DVC although s/he ultimately represents Senate and Council mandates

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD/Doctoral Degree in a discipline relevant to the school
  • Associate Professor/Professor with experience in an academic/research leadership role
  • An established academic leader and scholar with an excellent publication and research record and proven excellence in teaching and learning at a level that attracts respect and credibility from within the University, international scholars and other relevant external bodies
  • Three (3) years’ experience in management and leadership of a university School, Faculty or Research Unit/Centre of significant size and complexity
  • A track record of attracting competitive research grants
  • Proven experience in leading and managing change
