Job description

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is one of the top Universities in South Africa and in the top
500 Universities globally. The School of Life Sciences is well established with a strong research profile and has a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The School has an active Marine Biology programme with a strong research profile, and a large and vibrant postgraduate research programme.
 
The incumbent will be expected to contribute to teaching and research in the Marine Biology/Biology program on the Westville campus. S/he will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development, and supervise postgraduate students up to PhD level. A strong background in marine offshore ecology or the ecology and physiology of marine vertebrates, with an emphasis on fish is essential.
 
The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology.

Minimum requirements


Associate Professor
·        A PhD degree in Marine Biology or in a relevant discipline.
·        Evidence of excellent teaching experience and leadership in curriculum development experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.
·        Excellent and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
·        Excellent and sustained track record of a successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.
·        Excellent and sustained track record of successful attraction of external research grants.
·        Evidence of national and/or international recognition in a research area within the discipline.
 
Senior Lecturer
·      A PhD degree in Marine Biology or in a relevant discipline.
·      Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.
·      Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
·      A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level, appropriate for the level.
·      Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team.
