Introduction
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is one of the top Universities in South Africa and amongst the top 500 Universities globally. The School of Life Sciences at UKZN seeks to appoint a well-established scholar and international expert as a research professor in marine biology. The incumbent will be expected to undertake research and postgraduate supervision, coordinate research activity in marine biology and develop linkages and collaborative projects with existing staff and students at UKZN and with external partners, including forming international collaborations.
Job description
The incumbent is expected to play a leading role in the expansion of the research profile of the discipline of marine biology at UKZN and attract top postgraduate students and leading researchers to the University
She/he is expected to attract substantial research funding from external sources to the University, lead the development and implementation of the university research and innovation strategy in marine science, as well as capacitate the next generation of academics with a propensity for research
A strong background in numerical skills and complex analyses of large data sets to address one or more of the following issues is desirable:
- Monitoring cumulative effects of multiple stressors on marine systems at large scales
- Impacts of global change on ocean productivity at different levels
- Advancing ecological understanding across spatial and temporal scales through synthesis and integration of data sets, especially in the face of global change
- Identifying general principles in complex systems
- Understanding the resilience and fragility of interlinked complex systems
- Improving predictability of future ecosystem condition
Minimum requirements
- A PhD in the area of marine biology / biological oceanography
- An excellent and sustained record of publication of independent and impactful research in quality peer-reviewed scientific journals, as appropriate for the level
- Excellent and sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, as appropriate for the level
- Excellent and sustained track record of successful attraction of external research grants
- Evidence of national and international recognition in a research area within the discipline
- Evidence of strong and sustained academic leadership within the Department/ School/College/University/Broader Society, including mentorship and coaching
