Job description
- Serve as an independent, impartial resource for all members of the university community (students, staff, and academy)
- Provide confidential advice and mediation services to individuals or groups seeking resolution of complaints or conflicts within the institution
- Ensure fair treatment of all parties by promoting adherence to institutional policies, procedures, and values
- Assist in identifying systemic issues and areas for improvement in university policies and practices
- Mediate disputes informally or refer individuals to appropriate formal channels, as necessary
- Deliver regular reports to university leadership on patterns, trends, and recommendations to improve institutional effectiveness and conflict resolution mechanisms
- Develop and implement outreach programs to raise awareness of the Ombud’s services and foster a culture of fairness and accountability
Minimum requirements
- A relevant Masters degree in law, social sciences, conflict resolution, or a related field (A legal qualification will be a distinct advantage)
- A minimum of 10 years professional Ombud or similar experience, preferably in a higher education environment
- Evidence of formal training with certification, together with proven experience, in dispute and conflict resolution, mediation, or in a similar role, preferably within a higher education or public sector environment
- Strong understanding of South African higher education policies, practices, and legal frameworks
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and professionalism
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and operate independently while working in a complex organizational environment
- Ethical and impartial judgment
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify patterns and recommend solutions
- High level of emotional intelligence, empathy, and cultural awareness
- Ability to manage complex, sensitive situations involving multiple stakeholders
- A commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity within the institution
