Job description

The School  is inviting applications for a position in any relevant field of Geological Science, as aligned with the current discipline of Geological Sciences curriculum found here: https://ww3.caes.ukzn.ac.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/CAES-Handbook-2024-1.pdf. 

The School has an active group of academic staff contributing to research and teaching in wide-ranging areas of Geological Sciences. The incumbent will be required to teach theoretical and field-based discipline-specific modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to conduct research in Geological Sciences. A sound knowledge of southern African geology will be advantageous. S/he will be expected to establish a research programme, attract external research funds and supervise Honours and postgraduate students. The incumbent will be expected to have a track record that demonstrate success in peer-reviewed publishing and postgraduate supervision. S/he will be required to develop strong links with industry to promote scholarship and research in their area of expertise.

 The Discipline of Geological Sciences has a variety of equipment to facilitate research. These include an analytical laboratory with Panalytical XRF and XRD equipment; a Perkin Elmer Nexion ICP-MS with LA system and a SGE-USGS heating-freezing stage for fluid inclusion studies; a state of the art paleomagnetic laboratory equipped with JR-6A Spinner Magnetometer, LDA5 AF Demagnetizer, a dual-blade rock saw and  soon to be acquired MFK2-FA Spinner Kappabridge susceptibility bridge for conducting AMS analyses; a fully equipped thin-section laboratory; a marine sedimentology laboratory; and a fully equipped soil and rock engineering laboratory with a variety of relevant testing equipment.

Minimum requirements

Senior Lecturer 

  •  A PhD degree in Geological Science or a closely related field
  •  Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level
  • Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals appropriate for the level
  • A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level
  • Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team

Lecturer:

·       A PhD degree in Geological Science or closely related field; or Master’s degree in Geological Sciences, with evidence of submission of PhD for examination 

  • Experience in teaching in a relevant field at tertiary institution

·       Evidence of presentations at national or international conferences

·       Current research activity as evidenced by a publication in a quality scientific journal
