Job description

The School offers a vibrant educational and research environment in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics. It has many well established national and international collaborative research linkages.

In order to strengthen its teaching and research capabilities, the School wishes to appoint candidates who will actively contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, postgraduate student supervision, and research in Computer Science.  In particular, the School is building teaching and research capabilities in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computational Optimisation and Quantum Computing, and as such experience of teaching and/or research in any of these spaces would be advantageous.

The successful candidates will need to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in productive research, and teaching whilst also being actively involved in the important activities of the School such as academic administration, short-course development, and community projects. Apart from assuming responsibility for teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Discipline of Computer Science, the successful candidates will also be expected to participate in curriculum development and implementation, and evaluation of undergraduate programmes.  The School expects all academic staff to publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited scientific and/or academic journals, and deliver papers at national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment. The incumbents are expected to the establishment and lead research groups within the School.  The incumbents are also required to proactively attract and actively supervise Masters, Doctoral and Post-doctoral students, and mentor emerging academics in the Discipline.  Commensurate with the level of appointment there is a need to obtain research funding from external funding bodies, national and international funding agencies, and industry.

The successful applicant will report to the Academic Leader of Computer Science.

Minimum requirements

Professor:
  • A PhD Degree in Computer Science or related field with a good track record in Computer Science research.
  • Evidence of excellent teaching experience and leadership in curriculum development in a relevant field at tertiary level.
  • Excellent and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
  • Excellent and sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.
  • Excellent and sustained track record of successful attraction of external research grants.
  • Evidence of strong and sustained academic leadership within the Department / School/ College/ University, which includes mentorship and coaching.
  • Evidence of national and international recognition in a research area within the discipline.

Associate Professor:

  • A PhD Degree in Computer Science or related field with a good track record in Computer Science research.
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience and curriculum development experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.
  • Evidence of current and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
  • A sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.
  • Evidence of sustained and successful attraction of external research grants.
  • Evidence of national and/or international recognition in a research area within the discipline.
