Job description

The School has active research and teaching programmes at the Durban and Pietermaritzburg Centres and has an excellent research equipment infrastructure.
The School is seeking to appoint a suitable candidate with experience in the area of organic and peptide chemistry. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in Chemistry with proven research experience in Peptide and Organic Chemistry, as measured in terms of peer-reviewed journals. Knowledge of Physical Chemistry to understand the underlying principle behind reaction mechanisms. In addition, at least 1-year experience as Principal Investigator/Faculty. The candidate is expected to embark upon an active research programme and to supervise postgraduate and doctoral students. The candidate should have experience in teaching at a tertiary institution. The candidate should be able to prepare grant proposals and raise public and private funding for research, as part of the peptide research group. The incumbent will also be expected to have teaching duties within the School as allocated by the Research Professor of the peptide research group.

The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader (Chemistry, Westville Centre) and the Research Professor for Peptide Sciences.

Minimum requirements

·    A PhD degree in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry
·    Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level
·    Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journal
·    A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate student at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level
·    Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team
