Job description

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is one of the top Universities in South Africa and in the top 500 Universities globally. The School of Life Sciences is well established with a strong research profile and has a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The School has an active Marine Biology programme with a strong research profile, and a large and vibrant postgraduate research programme.
 
The incumbent will be expected to contribute to teaching and research in the Marine Biology/Biology program on the Westville campus. S/he will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development, and supervise postgraduate students up to PhD level. To complement research and teaching skills in the group, a strong background in marine phycology, marine ecophysiology or intertidal ecology is required.
 
The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology.
 



Minimum requirements

Senior lecturer:
·      A PhD degree in Marine Biology or a relevant related field
·      Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.
·      Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
·      A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level.
·      Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the principal investigator or as a member of a team.
 
Lecturer:
·      PhD degree in Marine Biology or related discipline OR MSc degree in Marine Biology or related discipline with evidence of submission of PhD for examination.
·      Experience in teaching in a relevant field at tertiary institution.
·      Evidence of presentations at national or international conference(s).
·      Current research activity as evidenced by a publication in quality scientific journals.
