Job description

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is one of the top Universities in South Africa and in the top
500 Universities globally. The School of Life Sciences is well established with a strong research profile and has a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The school has an active Microbiology discipline with a strong research profile, and a large number of postgraduate students with vibrant postgraduate research programme.
 
The incumbent will be expected to contribute to teaching and research in the Microbiology and other related discipline(s) on the Westville campus. S/he will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development, and supervise postgraduate students. A strong background in Microbiology, especially bacteriology and microbial genetics is essential.
 
The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Biotechnology.

Minimum requirements

Minimum Requirements:
 Lecturer:
·      PhD degree in Microbiology or a MSc degree in Microbiology or a related field with evidence of submission of PhD thesis for examination.
·      Experience in teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level.
·      Evidence of presentations at national or international conferences.
·      Current research activity as evidenced by publication(s) in quality scientific journals.
 
Senior Lecturer:
·      PhD degree in Microbiology or a related field.
·      Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.
·      Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
·      A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level as appropriate for the level.
·      Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team.
