Job description
The School of Medicine wishes to appoint a Specialist in Public Health Medicine with additional training in Medical Law and Bioethics who will contribute actively to the training and education of undergraduate medical students, registrars in Public Health Medicine (MMed), and Postgraduate students in Public Health, and to build the knowledge base of the department. Coordination and facilitation of teaching activities within the department is required.
Minimum requirements
- MBChB or equivalent
- A PhD Degree in Public Health/ Medical Law and Bioethics
- Registration as a Specialist in Public Health Medicine with the HPCSA
- A relevant Master's degree in Public Health Medicine
- 3 years’ experience in Public Health-related skills, including Epidemiology, Health Services Management
- Appropriate clinical experience.
- Computer literacy
- Valid driver’s licence
In addition, the following will be applicable depending on the level of appointment:
Minimum Requirement for Associate Professor
- Evidence of appropriate teaching experience and curriculum development experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.
- Evidence of current and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
- A sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.
- Evidence of sustained and successful attraction of external research grants.
- Evidence of national and/or international recognition in a research area within the discipline.
- Appointment level will be dependent on years’ experience after registration with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner, as well as their academic and professional credentials.
Minimum Requirements for Professor
- Evidence of excellent teaching experience and leadership in curriculum development in a relevant field at tertiary level
- Excellent and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level
- Excellent and sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level
- Excellent and sustained track record of successful attraction of external research grants
- Evidence of strong and sustained academic leadership within the Department / School/ College/ University, which includes mentorship and coaching
- Evidence of national and international recognition in a research area within the discipline
