Job description

UKZN has longstanding expertise in space physics, and is one of three nodes of NASSP (National Astronomy and Space Science Programme). The School seeks to appoint a suitably-qualified candidate as an Associate Professor to lead the way in strengthening space physics and NASSP at UKZN.

The successful candidate will have expertise and a research track record in one or more of the following areas: ionospheric physics, magnetospheric physics (of Earth and/or other planets), magnetosphere-solar wind interaction. S/he will be expected to conduct independent, externally funded research in space physics, to participate actively in teaching physics at undergraduate and Honours levels and in postgraduate supervision, and to play a leading role in NASSP, including directing and organising the programme, as well as teaching on its courses and supervising student projects.

The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Physics.

Minimum requirements

·       A PhD degree in Space Physics.

·       Evidence of appropriate teaching experience and curriculum development experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.

·       Evidence of current and sustained publication of independent research in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.

·       A sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level, appropriate for the level.

·       Evidence of sustained and successful attraction of external research grants.

·       Evidence of national and/or international recognition in a research area within the discipline.
