Job description

The School has an active group of academic staff contributing to research and teaching in Geological Sciences. The School is seeking to appoint an individual with expertise in metamorphic petrology. The incumbent will be required to teach, using curricula in keeping with modern developments in the field, and will assist in developing discipline-wide postgraduate teaching programmes. In addition to teaching, s/he will be expected to develop and maintain active research programmes that will involve post-graduate students and attract external funding and conduct research in relevant aspects of geology. S/he will be expected to establish a research programme, supervise post-graduate students and be involved in the School administration/outreach activities.
 
The Discipline of Geological Sciences has a variety of equipment to facilitate teaching and research. This includes an analytical laboratory with Panalytical XRF and XRD equipment; a Perkin Elmer Nexion ICP-MS with LA system and a SGE-USGS heating-freezing stage for fluid inclusion studies, a basic paleomagnetic laboratory equipped with JR-6A Spinner Magnetometer, LDA5 AF Demagnetizer and Dual-blade rock saw; fully equipped thin-section laboratory.
 
The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Geological Sciences.

Minimum requirements

Senior Lecturer
·   A PhD degree in Geological Science or related field
·   Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level
·   Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
·   A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level
·   Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team
 
Lecturer
·   A PhD degree in Geological Science or related field or Master’s degree in Geological Sciences, with evidence of submission of PhD for examination
·   Experience in teaching in a relevant field at tertiary institution
·   Evidence of presentations, at national or international conference
·   Current research activity as evidenced by a publication in quality scientific journals
