The Principal Graphic Designer will lead the conceptualisation, development, and execution of high-quality visual communication across a wide range of print and digital platforms. Working from both written and verbal briefs, the incumbent will translate strategic communication objectives into compelling and impactful creative solutions that align with the University’s institutional identity and brand guidelines.
The role requires a highly skilled and experienced design professional who can manage complex design projects, provide creative direction, oversee brand consistency, and collaborate with internal stakeholders across the University.
In addition, the incumbent will mentor junior design staff where applicable, manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and provide innovative design solutions that support the strategic objectives of the Corporate Relations Division.
The incumbent will report to the Head of Graphic Design.
Minimum requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- A relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Multimedia Design, or a related field
- A minimum of 5 years’ proven experience in a professional graphic design environment, with a strong portfolio demonstrating advanced creative and conceptual design capabilities
- Advanced understanding of design principles, branding, typography, layout, and visual communication strategies
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage creative projects from concept to completion
- Ability to lead a design team through design projects and daily operations
- Experience in digital content creation, campaign design, and publication layout
- Excellent communication, organisational, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Submission of a comprehensive graphic design portfolio (required)
- Portfolio submissions should demonstrate conceptual thinking, brand consistency, and technical proficiency
- Experience in leading creative teams or supervising junior designers
- Knowledge of current graphic design trends, motion graphics, and animation
- Experience in video production, photography, and multimedia content development
- Strong understanding of social media platforms and digital engagement strategies
- Experience working within a higher education, corporate, or large institutional environment
