Job description

The main purpose of this position is to use a blend of technical skills and an artistic eye to capture and produce high-quality photographic material for the university’s print and digital publications and other ad hoc projects that market the university as a world-class institution.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce quality photographs that are user-friendly for media, social/digital platforms.
  • Attend events and functions and other arranged appointments to take photographs for CRD’s and other digital and print publications
  • Scout locations and set up photo shoots for special ad hoc corporate projects
  • Compose shots using framing, colour and light to create visually pleasing and technically acceptable photographs
  • Capture photos according to briefs and interpret briefs creatively to complement related content.
  • Build relationships with all levels of staff and other stakeholders to facilitate photographic projects.
  • Take publicity-worthy pictures for all publications, print and digital, that reflect the essence of the related content and the brief.
  • Source and distribute pictures from newsroom archives, digital asset management system and/or internal and external sources for all stakeholders as requested.  
  • Keep abreast of photography trends, techniques and styles and advise Corporate Relations Division on these to ensure the university remains competitive in this area

The incumbent will report to the Manager: Creative & Digital Content.

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Three- year tertiary qualification in any relevant or related field.
  • Three years of experience in photography in a communications environment and at least 2 years in higher education, preferably in an editorial space.
Knowledge & Skills 
  • Proficiency in working with photographic equipment, including camera bodies, lenses, tripods, and lighting.
  • Ability to compose photographs using framing, colour and light; photographic archiving, including metadata capture, file storage, and digital asset management systems;
  • Scouting locations and setting up shoots; time management and scheduling; interpersonal skills; ability to interpret a brief creatively to complement articles; good individual worker and a team player
