Introduction
The College of Health Sciences seeks to appoint a Student Counsellor on sessional basis over a 5-year contract basis. The post is based at the respective Hospital at the Decentralized Clinical Training Platform, viz, Newcastle-Madadeni.
Job description

The incumbent will be required to:
  • Promote positive mental health and to facilitate the holistic development, and emotional well-being of the College of Health Sciences students, through the provision of assessment, individual and group counselling/therapy, wellness programmes, skills development, and referral services
  • Participate in relevant professional administrative tasks e.g report writing, maintaining professional records, filing, case notes, letters, staff meetings and evaluation, as well as administrative tasks related to the counselling and development services as requested by the College Manager, Student support
  • Represent the College Support Services at College and/or University wide meetings as requested 
  • Comply reports and statistics on services for discussion at College and/or University structures
  • Comply with CPD requirements prescribed by the HPCSA/SACSSP and the professional board of Psychology/Social Work

Minimum requirements

  • Master’s degree in Psychology (Counselling, Clinical, Educational or Industrial) or
  • Master’s degree in Social Work (with specialisation in Clinical Social Work)
  • Current professional registration as an independent practitioner with the HPCSA or SACSSP
  • Two (2) years of post-registration, relevant experience as an independent practitioner
  • Knowledge of student learning, and development theories
  • Must have the flexibility to offer the contracted hours of service in either the working day, afternoons, evenings or weekends
  • Services must be offered face to face at the respective DCTP site
  • Sessional Student Counsellors must have time available to offer services for a minimum of 15 hours per week
