Job description

The Ukulinga Research and Training Farm is a multidisciplinary College platform supporting teaching, research, innovation, outreach and experiential learning. 

The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership for the efficient and sustainable management of the farm. The role integrates mixed-farming operations with academic priorities; supports research trials; oversees infrastructure, assets, equipment and critical services; manages budgets and people; safeguards resources; builds partnerships; and advances appropriate revenue-support initiatives. 

The successful candidate will manage competing priorities, work under pressure and operate effectively outdoors. S/he must have strong organisational, leadership, communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage a complex, multi-user environment

The successful candidate will have practical knowledge of mixed farming systems, including livestock, crops, and horticulture, as well as sustainable agricultural practices and technologies. S/he must have knowledge of occupational health, safety and environmental compliance, operational risk and safe operating procedures. S/he must be physically fit and able to work in outdoor environments.

The incumbent will report to the Head: Technical Operations and functionally to the Ukulinga Management Committee.

Minimum requirements

  • A relevant four-year degree or an Honours degree in a related field at NQF Level 8.
  • Seven years relevant work experience, of which at least two years must be at a senior level, including management of an agricultural, research or training environment.
  • Demonstrated multidisciplinary operational leadership, including financial and resource management, infrastructure and asset management, and stakeholder and partnership engagement.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • A valid driver's licence
